Golf at the Saunton Sands Hotel in Devon

Nick Faldo praises Saunton Golf Club

If you're a keen golfer you're in for a treat. You'll find some of the best courses close to Devon hotels here. Next door to the hotel is the prestigious Saunton Golf Club.

‘I am a huge fan of Saunton' said Nick Faldo, who played a recent testimonial here. ‘Framed by magnificent sand hills, it is a classic links course where the character of the terrain and the vagaries of a near ever-present wind combine to create a wonderfully absorbing challenge.‘ Praise indeed from one of golf's biggest ever stars!

The club is ranked at number 61 in Golf World's ‘World's Best 100 Courses', and has been chosen as the setting for the English amateur Championship in 2014. This comes as no surprise to Brian Perks, the Saunton Sands Hotel golf coordinator: ‘We've seen some of the best players in the world here at Saunton over the years, because it's a fantastic course in a spectacular natural environment.' There are two 18-hole courses (both with a par of 71), one a true links course where you can enjoy your round in a glorious coastal setting.

Fees range from £46 to £80 depending on the season and time and day, with a special discount for Saunton Sands Hotel residents. Motorised buggies are available to make your round yet more relaxing and enjoyable.

Golf, of course, is not just for experts - if you're keen to learn, the Saunton Sands has its own putting green where you can practice your swing.

Golf history and memorabilia at Westward Ho!

While you are here in Devon, make sure you play a round at the Royal North Devon Course at Westward Ho!. It's the oldest links course in the country, and just a short drive further round the Devon coast. Here you can test your skills on a world-famous course, and visit the clubhouse, which is packed with golfing memorabilia and a Mecca for enthusiasts of the game.

Exhilarating surfing for experts and beginners

Saunton Beach is the perfect place to learn to surf. You and your family will have the benefit of Walking on Waves' dedicated surf coach Sarah Whiteley.  Sarah says, 'I teach all ages and all abilities in mixed two-hour sessions, so anyone can get involved, and I like to think that everyone gets a lot out of it. For me, the main aim is to get everyone standing up on the board and smiling. It's so exhilarating that it's impossible to not smile while you're doing it.' You can hire everything you need, including boards and wetsuits, on Saunton beach just below our Devon hotel.

And that's not all:  just around the bay are the world-famous Devon surf beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe, where you can watch the skills of some of the most talented surfers in the country.
